Cenote Info & Map
Cenotes are sinkholes and there are four different types.
  • The first are the underground cenotes which are completely underground, like small lakes inside a cave. Examples: Hidden worlds Cenote, Xplor, Rio Secreto, Aktun Chen
  • The other are underground cenotes which have a hole in their roof, where sunlight can come inside.
  • Third there are the ones that doesn't have a roof at all Just side walks. Examples: Dzitnup ceneto near Valladolid, ikil near chichen itza.
  • And the last are completely open, almost as lakes. Example: Cenotes in Xelha, Xcaret

 Mayan Ruins
2 of them that are worth seeing: Tulum and Chichen Itza. Tulum is near the water while chichen is about a 2-3 hr drive 1 way.

Chichen Itza by Car

  • Chichén Itzá opens at 8:00 am, try to be there before 9:00 at least. Going early allows you to see most of the area before it gets too hot (there is very little shade) and also lets you beat the majority of the huge tour buses from Cancun that spill out hundreds of noisy tourists out on the site by around noon.
  • Take water if you can and wear a big silly hat to protect your head from the sun.
  •  Fill your tank in Cancun and again in Valladolid if necessary. There is only one gas station along the toll road and it’s a long way away. In an emergency gas can be purchased at the toll booths, but there are only two of those along the whole road to Chichén Itzá. In 2010 the tolls for a car were $214.00 pesos(toll1) and $53(toll2) pesos each way. You will not have to pay the $53 pesos on the way back if you take the free road to Valladolid.
  • Wear good shoes. You will be doing plenty of walking and the steps on the pyramid are smooth, slippery and irregular.
  • Admission to the Chichén Itzá is around 111 pesos for adults and 10 pesos to park.
  • After you have finished at Chichén Itzá  (usually 3-4 hours) take the libre (free) road to Valladolid. It’s a right turn as you exit the ruins.
  • Guides usually wait at the entrance and charge around 450 pesos for one to six people.

  • Señor Frogs: In Cancun hotel zone and Playa del carmen
 Massage Places in Playa
  • Many massage places on 5th Avenue that are not as expensive as compared to the spas in the hotels.
Car Rentals
If staying in hotel zone, public transportation is awesome, so car is not really needed. But could be needed to go down south for activities. Best to book in advance as rates are less then 1/2 of what is offered in store. If staying in Riviera Maya and plan on doing activities, then I would highly suggest renting one. Ask your hotel for overnight parking cost.

Trails/Hikes

Hiking Map

In Andrew Molera State Park
  • Andrew Molera Loop : 8.8  miles loop. Loop of trails is notable for spectacular coastal bluff views, and access to several remote beaches. Creamery Meadow Trail to Bluffs Trail to Panarama Trail to Ridge Trail and back to Creamery Meadow Trail. http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/hikes_moleraloop.html

In Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park:
  • Pfeiffer Falls and Valley View Trail : 2.4  miles roundtrip, easy. A scenic hike along Pfeiffer Big Sur Creek through one of the park's finest redwood groves ends at a 60-foot high waterfall. Beautiful views of Point Sur and the Big Sur Valley. http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/hikes_pfeifferfalls.htm  Experience: Pfeiffer Falls was closed and Valley View was not really worth the hike for my friends and me.

  • Oak Grove Trail:3 miles roundtrip from the entrance to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, easy to moderate hike. This trail intersects with the Pfeiffer Falls trail. There is a variety of ecosystems beginning with redwood groves, open oak woodlands, and dry chaparral.http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/hikes_oakgrove.html . Same parking area as Pfeiffer Falls and Valley View.

Just Before Julia Pfeiffer Burns State park
  • Tan Bark Trail: appox 6 miles(might be closed) A strenuous loop into the hills above Big Sur with amazing views along the coast as far as the eye can see. This tough climb away from Highway 1 will reward you with breathtaking views. The trail starts along Partington Creek - on the south side of Partington Canyon. http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/hikes_tanbark.html

In Julia Pfeiffer Burns State park
  • McWay Waterfall Trail: .64 mile roundtrip, easy. A quick walk to an overlook facing McWay Falls, an incredible 80-foot waterfall that drops directly onto the sandy beach http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/hikes_mcwayfalls.html Experience: Before the walk(note the word used) even started it ended :) .My first waterfall that falls on the sand, so that means something I guess..
  • Ewoldsen Trail:  4.5 miles roundtrip, moderate to strenuous. A loop trail starting in the redwood forest by McWay Creek and climbing to incredible coastal views. http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/hikes_ewoldsen.html Same parking area as Mcway Waterfall trail. So can combine together if open.

Limekiln State Park:
  • Limekiln Trails: appox 3 miles. An exceptional and fairly level hike through towering redwoods along several lush creeks, with both a waterfall and the historic limekilns among the sights. As a bonus, you can then take a short walk out to the coast for a scenic rocky beach under the shadow of Highway. http://www.hikinginbigsur.com/hikes_limekiln.html. Experience: Loved the water-fall.. Had packed some sandwiches before leaving our cabin, so had that at the bottom of the falls .
Restaurants

Concert in Bug Sur
  • http://www.henrymiller.org/index.html. Attended Blonde Redhead. Nice cosy setting for about 200 people.

Places to stay
  • Cabin Rental from owners: We rented from http://www.vrbo.com/248786. This house was on top of the mountain and had awesome views.
  • Big Sur River Inn: We did not stay here but stopped to have a few drinks. They have chairs that can be kept on the shallow creek and you can sip and have your beers while sitting on the river. They also have tubes that were being used by kids/adults and seemed like a lot of fun.

  • FernWood Resort and Campground
  • GlenOaks Motel
